Art with a pawpose
Project Overview
Driving Question: How can you use art to save the lives of animals in need?
Entry Event: Shoestring Ranch, and Perfect Pet Rescue visited classes to share a few of their rescue animals. They passed out fliers to inform students about our overpopulation problem and free clinics they can get their pets spayed or neutered. The animals hoped or ran around the room while they spoke to the students. We had ducks, a goat, and bunnies on one day. The other day we had 2 dogs visit our classes. It really hit home with the students hearts when they met Biggie Smalls the handicap pug puppy that had twisted front legs and a soft spot on his skull. He was given to them by a purebred breeder because he wasn't sellable.
Resources: SPCA, Shoestring Ranch, The Dog Squad, LA Animal Rescue, Perfect Pet Rescue, LA Animal Rescue, Adopt a pet .com, LA Animal Rescue, and Photoshop Videos.
Deliverables: Students will create a flier for an animal of their choice that needs adopting or sponsoring.
Ending Event: We invited several adoption agencies out to our fundraiser/art show. I luckily had a group of Seniors who organize the food sales, bounce house, and snow cone machine. Once students paid of the cost of materials the profits were split between the organizations who attended the event. We also had 3 bunnies and 1 dog adopted at the event. We advertised at our school through a newsletter, students were required to post their flier in 3 public places, we posted our event on Nextdoor App, and we posted the event in the neighborhood announcements.
Successes: The students were really invested in making a quality project because it had a strong purpose. If students finished early they asked to make another one. Students were more excited to learn Photoshop in this lesson than they were in past years when I taught Photoshop using a different project.
Obstacles I would do different next time: The event was not as busy as I was hoping it would be. I would advertise more or hold it in front of a grocery store or pet store or somewhere there is already foot traffic. I wish I had posted the event in the neighborhood newsletters. We did post on the Next-door app and we sent home a newsletter to parents at the local schools. We also had students holding signs near the stop light (with a parent volunteer supervision).
