Project Overview
Driving Question: How can we tell a story about ourselves through a sculpture with symbols?
Entry Event: Students watch the movie Coco to learn a brief history of the Mexican culture. They completed a worksheet then did research on their own spirit animal.
Resources: Spirit Animal Quiz 1, Spirit Animal Quiz 2, 25 spirit animals description, Power Point, Coco on Netflix, 3D Warehouse
Deliverables: Worksheet on Coco, 10 symbols to represent yourself, 3 views of your spirit animal (front, profile, and top), painted paper mâché sculpture with 5 or more symbols painted on it.
Ending Event: Presentations and Art Display
Rubric: alebrije_rubric_2019.xlsx
Successes: The majority of students LOVED the project. This provided an opportunity individual creative expression. I found some oil paint markers on Amazon that worked great for the details and went over dark background colors with one layer. Amazon link to oil paint markers 36 Pack Paint Pens for Painting
Obstacles I would do different next time: Warning about the oil paint markers I ordered, they came apart easily and the paint was spilling all over the place. I solved it by taping each one with clear tape. Also, the plaster was TIME Consuming to make, messy and challenging to find places for it to dry without it falling apart. I'm using paper mâché next time.

Presentation:
Create a slide show or Prezi and include the following requirements:
Slide #1 Introduction slide, include your name, art period, and title (Alebrije Spirit Animal)
Slide #2 Include a quality photo of your paper mâché sculpture combining 2 or more animals. The photo must have a solid color background so it does not distract away from the sculpture. The photo must be well lit, avoiding case shadows. The photo must be in focus and the colors must accurately match the project. (I set up a trifold board in my classroom on a counter, or butcher paper folded in half so it's doubled up as a backdrop for student photography of their projects. It would be a bonus if you had quality lighting with a soft light box.)
Slide #3 Describe how those animals represent you. Include a photo of both animals you used for your inspiration.
Slide #4 Include a photo of 5 or more symbols that you included on your sculpture and explain how they represent you or tell your story. (The photos may be of your drawings in your sketchbook, or from the internet, or close up photos of the symbols painted on your sculpture.)
Slide #5 Describe an obstacle you ran into and describe verbally (not in writing) how you solved it.

Tips and Tricks to make a quality presentation:
- Use. as few words as possible on each slide.
- Choose. a background theme that matches the style or color scheme of your project.
- Make sure the background theme is not distracting or it will take away the focus from your project.
- Align your text boxes and images vertically or horizontally with each other on the top and bottom so they do not look messy and vary too much in size.
- Make your slides parallel. Place the title in the same place on each slide. Use the same size fonts on each slide. Stick to 2-3 different font sizes, do not use more variety it'll look messy. Use 1-2 different font styles, or it will look messy and chaotic.
- Use bold lettering or larger text to emphasize the titles on each slide.
- Title each image with a small text font size to describe what we are looking at.
